When to Seek a Learning Assessment for Your Child
Introduction
Many children face learning challenges — but how do you know when it’s time for an assessment?
Common Red Flags:
- Struggles with reading, writing, or numeracy beyond what’s age-appropriate
- Avoidance of homework or school-related tasks
- Complaints of feeling “stupid” or comparing themselves negatively to peers
- Poor memory or trouble following multi-step instructions
- Teacher concerns that progress is below expectations despite effort
Learning difficulties often go unnoticed because children can mask them — through humour, avoidance, or disruptive behaviour.
What a Learning Assessment Involves
A psychologist uses tools like the WISC-V and WIAT-III to explore:
- Cognitive functioning (e.g., memory, processing speed)
- Academic skills (reading, writing, math)
- Emotional or behavioural patterns that may impact learning
